Sunday
After a late night at the Madera Tango show Sat. night, we managed a sleep in before rushing to get the last minutes of the complimentary breakfast at the hotel. From there we packed our bags and headed off to stand in line for the cruise check in. After what seemed like hours we boarded and located our cabin and were surprised to find our bags already delivered so were able to unpack and get settled in. We departed Buenos Aires about 5.30, following a long series of buoys as the channel is actually quite shallow.
After finding our way to one of the restaurants, we went to the evening show .....the cruise host totally wowed us as he was able to converse fluently in at least 6 or seven languages, sometimes what seemed to be without taking a breath...Based on the attendence there, there is a very international mix of people on the cruise. As expected, the entertainment was great with promises to have a good variety for the rest of the cruise. We then made our way to the lounge on the observation deck to listen to one of the groups playing jazz classical music for a couple of hours before making our way to bed as we are scheduled on an early morning excursion.
Monday
Dec 8,
We woke up to a beautiful warm day arriving in Montevideo, Uruguay just after 6.30 am. Time to grab a quick breakfast and get to the meeting point for our scheduled tour of the city and then off to the Al Rabida ranch for a taste of how life is lived in here. Our tour guide for the day was Claudia, an English teacher from a private school was full of information and had a great sense of humor. After a 45 min. drive we arrived at the ranch where we were met by four family members in south American traditional gaucho attire. We were treated to refreshments immediately, then the owner of the ranch, Olga gave us a short talk on the background of the family and how the ranch operated. From there we took a hayride to the beach, explored a bit, then returned for a typical Uruguan barbeque and some unique entertainment. All the vegetables for the salads were grown on the ranch and one of the boys cooked the meat over a wooden coal bed.....sweetbreads, kidney, sausage, lamb, beef, chicken and pork were the order of the day followed by fresh strawberries and peach pie.
Dinner complete, it was time for the sheep shearing, cow milking, horseback riding and some prairie surfing!! What a hoot! All in all, a really great tour and well worth the price.
Back to the ship for a quick nap, a light snack and the evening entertainment. Tomorrow is a day at sea so time to put the feet up, do a crossword or two and generally take it easy.
